With the active participation of many sponsors and volunteers, young people in New York City and New Jersey have the opportunity to participate on FIRST Robotics , FIRST Tech Challenge , and FIRST LEGO League and Junior FIRST LEGO League teams and compete in tournaments and competitions here in the region and around the nation. Teams which qualify may also go to compete at the FIRST Championship at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta.

In 2006, the region had 93 FIRST Robotics teams, and nearly 240 FIRST LEGO League teams. The launch of FIRST Tech Challenge is underway as well as Junior FIRST LEGO League.

New York City / New Jersey FIRST also hosts programs that help students and their mentors and coaches with the technical and team building aspects of the FIRST participation.
