U.S. ranks 35th in math and 29th in science worldwide
From Connect a Million Minds (CAMM), a Time Warner Cable’s initiative to connect youth to ideas, people and opportunities that will inspire them in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math):
To better understand how attitudes and beliefs among young Americans contribute to our poor rankings, “Connect a Million Minds” traveled to three countries that rank significantly higher in math and science literacy – Finland, China and Australia – and interviewed young people, parents and teachers about science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) and related issues. We compared what we heard from these nations to responses from interviews conducted here in the U.S.
Here is what we heard:
- Youth from outside the U.S. take it as a given that if they want to be successful in life, they have to do well in math and science. We did not hear this from the U.S kids.
- Youth from outside the U.S. are more aware that they will compete in a global marketplace and not just against kids in their own country.
- Outside the U.S., there is much less of a social stigma attached to being smart and doing well in school. In fact, the smart kids are considered cool.

2010 Jr. FLL Registration Opened
Registration for the 2010 Body Forward Season of Jr.FLL opened on Monday, August 2nd at 12 noon EST. Log in to here https://my.usfirst.org/jr.fll/tims to register your team.
Please note that Jr.FLL team numbers do not roll over from season to season, so coaches will need to register yearly if returning in 2010 for the new season. For the first time ever, teams will be able to download the Jr.FLL Challenge materials IMMEDIATELY upon registering. Does your team think seeing the Jr.FLL Challenge will give them a ”leg up” in preparing for the FLL Challenge? Go ahead and register as a Jr.FLL team! (It’s only $25 US.)
Also, think about mentoring a Jr.FLL team or orchestrating a Jr.FLL event. It’s a great way to make FLL a year-round experience, and to keep spreading the mission of FIRST.
For more information about registration for the 2010 Jr.FLL season, please visit: Important Registration Information Page. Also, visit the new global Junior FIRST® LEGO® League website www.juniorfirstlegoleague.org
